So I know it IS Halloween, but.. I've decided to launch my blog. I suppose by launch I mean, delicately begin to post things online whilst cringing inwardly and munching a lot of full packs of custard creams in the process. But hey, the time is apparently now and coincidently, now just feels like the time. So away I go.
I love Halloween. I think the last week of October is hands down my favourite time of the year. Wouldn't expect that from a horror movie-a-phobe who checks under her bed each night would ya. But alas it is true. I get more excited for Halloween than my birthday.
It's not just the fancy dress either- although I'll admit, it is compulsory in my eyes. I've always been a little bit in love with the Gothic; stories of beasts and monsters, macabre forests, fairy tales, sadistic kings and queens. I have nearly always found myself rooting for the villain in any piece; Iago, Ursula, Bellatrix, SCAR- I mean talk about squad goals.
I guess I like the idea that each of us has a destructive side. We are all, of course, capable of doing terrible things. I'm not talking Hannibal Lecter level psychopath here (for all you serial killers out there); more the seven deadly sins style rule breaking. Crashing through the walls of real life and falling off the grid. Getting lost in Wonderland for a while. We all have hidden desires that our societal decorum keeps at bay, day in day out. We bury them inside of us until we barely remember they exist. Then one day, that loose thread that we've forgotten about, snags; and slowly we begin to unravel. Before you know it, we have a classic case of Anakin Skywalker on our hands.
And that's what Halloween is really. To me anyway. A safe outlet to play the villain. It's the abandon of the mundane, of the sensible, and the release of some pent up deviant ambition. People dress up as monsters. Hell, I even wrote a whole article on why I seemed to always dress up like a man. Girls can get the stick for being 'slutty', boys for taking things too far. We all come tumbling off of the train tracks, just for one night.
The purpose of this blog was to indulge in the make believe, to keep some of that fantastical Halloween magic going all year round. Yet, it's also more than that. It's about freedom of self expression. Getting lost in the woods and exploring what happens when the bread crumbs run out. I sound super lame, I know.
And what with it being the night of frights, I decided to make my first face paint tutorial a Halloween one. Last year I did my own design of Frankenstein, inspired by the 1931 movie. It's actually a pretty great film if you enjoy over-dramatic music and monsters throwing children into lakes. I also bloody love the novel, but think I'll save that for another blog.
This yearrrrr.. I went as the Joker from Batman. I wanted to be the kind of villain who would smile manically at you whilst killing your cat. I did also originally want to be female, but turns out there ain't that many crazy ladies out there who wear cool outfits. Still, I had a good night and got hit on by a weirdly high amount of guys. I guess 'why so serious?' tends to lend itself pretty easily to a chat up line maybe..? Who knew Joker fetishes were a thing eh. Each to their own.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
